Old red Rusty’s final days

Oct. 1 update

Rust has severely deteriorated this 1200 Fiat which I bought along with a blue Fiat about 25-28 years ago in Quilcene. Both old red Rusty and Blue had been neglected for decades. I didn’t give them much attention, either.

I pulled what I could from Blue before having it hauled off. Much of the car was gone.

I held onto Rusty, even moving the car 270 miles south to Stevenson after leaving it in a storage yard in PT for more than 10 years.

I’ve pulled quite a bit from old red rust – the windshield, engine and transmission, gas tank, wiring harness and steering column.

I’ve cut through several panels on old red Rusty to pull parts. I sawed off the rear panel holding the bumper though it’s in sad, sad shape.

I removed the gas tank, wiring and heater this month (October 2024).

I plan to unbolt the front clip and perhaps the rear axle and springs, if I can.

Rusty will go to a junkyard to be crushed and perhaps recycled.

A few body parts are destined for other Fiat 1200s around the world. I had sold a steering column to an owner in Australia pulled from another junker. This car’s steering column will be offered for sale, too.
